Inside a spacious hotel ballroom, Bronny James faced a crowded press gaggle for the first time in months on Tuesday. Reporters eagerly questioned him about his time at USC, his preparation for joining the NBA, and his participation in the 2024 NBA Draft Combine in Chicago. Despite the pressure, Bronny eloquently expressed his desire to step out from his father’s shadow and forge his own path.

“I would be happy about getting to the league instead of me thinking about playing with my dad,” Bronny stated. “But, that’s not my mindset at all. I’m just trying to put in the work and see where it takes me.”

This week, Bronny has impressed many at the Combine. On Monday, he posted a 40.5-inch max vertical jump and finished second in the 3-point star shooting drill. However, it was his candid responses to the media that stood out the most on Tuesday. He emphasized his personal goals and aspirations, separate from his father, LeBron James, the Lakers superstar and NBA icon.

“My dream has always just been to put my name out, make a name for myself, and of course, you know, get to the NBA, which is everyone’s end goal that is here,” he said. “And, you know, I never thought about just playing with my dad, but of course, he’s brought it up a couple of times.”

LeBron James has frequently mentioned his dream of playing in the NBA with his son, and this dream is nearing reality with the draft just over a month away. However, Bronny’s current draft projection remains uncertain. He is not currently projected as a top-60 pick, which means he could go undrafted. Despite this, the allure of selecting him—along with the potential benefits—keeps his name in draft discussions. If the Lakers were to pick him, for instance, he could become his dad’s teammate.

Bronny’s performance in Chicago has had its ups and downs, showcasing his potential while also highlighting areas for improvement. His situation is unique, given his famous lineage, which brings additional attention and pressure. Yet, Bronny remains focused on being recognized for his own merits.

“I just want to, you know, have people know my name is Bronny James and not be identified as just LeBron James‘ son,” he emphasized.

As the draft approaches, Bronny continues to work hard to achieve his goal of joining the NBA, determined to make a name for himself and step out of his father’s immense shadow. Whether drafted or picked up as a free agent, Bronny’s journey is one to watch, as he strives to be recognized for his own talents and contributions to the game.
