The spotlight was on Bronny James Jr. during the Los Angeles Lakers’ Summer League clash with the Houston Rockets, but it wasn’t the performance he had hoped for. On July 12, at the Thomas & Mack Center, Bronny James admits to ‘slump’ as he found himself struggling, contributing to the Lakers’ 99-80 defeat.
Bronny James Admits to ‘Slump’ Amid Lakers’ Summer League Struggles
James managed just eight points, shooting a dismal 3-of-14 from the field and a shocking 0-of-8 from beyond the arc in 27 minutes of play. His frustration was evident as he candidly told reporters post-game, “I’m in a little slump right now.”
Despite his shooting woes, James showed his versatility with five rebounds and two steals. Yet, his struggles from the field have been a recurring theme throughout the Summer League. During the California Classic, he hit only 3-of-12 shots and has yet to make a three-pointer in 12 attempts across both California and Las Vegas games.
The scouting reports on James from his college days pointed out his shaky jumper. B/R’s Jonathan Wasserman highlighted before the draft that James’ scoring potential relied heavily on transition plays and jump shots, either from the catch or after a dribble or two.
Summer League is a crucible for development, and James is using this time to hone the weaker aspects of his game. While it’s unlikely he’ll rectify all his issues in two weeks, the Lakers hope to see enough progress to be optimistic about his future contributions in training camp.
Showing maturity, James expressed his willingness to embrace any role the Lakers assign him, even if it means playing in the G League. “I’m just looking forward to any basketball I play—no matter what level I’m playing at,” he said.
Defense remains James’ strong suit. At 19, he has already made an impression with four steals and three blocks in three games. If he maintains this defensive prowess, he could secure a niche role with the Lakers, potentially coming off the bench to help maintain leads.
James will have another shot at redemption and to shake off his slump on Monday when the Lakers face the Boston Celtics at 7:30 p.m. ET. It’s another opportunity for him to showcase his skills and prove he’s ready to step up, despite the early setbacks.
