Kansas basketball made headlines by officially announcing the addition of Northern Illinois transfer David Coit on Monday. The senior guard, who is making the leap from the Mid-American Conference (MAC) to the Big 12 Conference, is expected to bring a new dynamic to the Jayhawks’ lineup this season.

Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 175 pounds, Coit is a two-time All-MAC honoree. His arrival comes at a crucial time for Kansas, especially given the injury to sophomore guard Elmarko Jackson. Head coach Bill Self expressed enthusiasm about what Coit brings to the table.

“David can shoot; he has range,” Self said in a KU press release. “He’s a player who can score the basketball. He averaged 21 points this past year at Northern Illinois. I see him as a guy that gives us a whole different dimension that we may not have had he not signed with us.”

With Coit’s addition, Kansas strengthens its case as a favorite not only to win the Big 12 but also to contend for a national championship. The Jayhawks boast returning starters such as graduate center Hunter Dickinson, graduate guard Dajuan Harris Jr., and senior forward KJ Adams Jr. They’ve also added other talents like junior guard AJ Storr (Wisconsin), junior guard Rylan Griffen (Alabama), and senior guard Zeke Mayo (South Dakota State) via the transfer portal.

Fans eager to see the revamped roster in action can catch a preview during “Late Night in the Phog” in mid-October, followed by an exhibition game at home against Washburn later that month. Kansas opens its regular season on November 4 at home against Howard, with a marquee matchup against North Carolina scheduled for November 8.
