Anna Horford has taken to social media to dismiss the “weird” retirement rumors about her elder brother, Al Horford, retiring from the NBA. The 38-year-old veteran recently secured his first NBA championship with the Boston Celtics, a significant milestone in his illustrious career. The five-time All-Star clinched his first ring in his 18th season in the league, a testament to his enduring talent and resilience.

Al Horford played a pivotal role in the Celtics’ journey to their 18th NBA title. Despite his age, the veteran big man started most of the games in the playoffs, including crucial appearances in the NBA Finals. This was particularly important as the Celtics faced the absence of Kristaps Porzingis, who missed the majority of the games due to injury. Horford’s contributions were instrumental, starting 15 games during the 2024 NBA playoffs and showcasing his value to the team.

Rumors about Al Horford’s retirement have been swirling, largely due to his age and the natural speculation that follows a major career milestone. Fans and analysts have pondered whether the two-time NCAA champion would decide to end his career on a high note after finally achieving an NBA championship. However, these speculations were promptly addressed by Anna Horford, who took to social media to set the record straight.

“Rumors about Al retiring were always weird,” Anna Horford stated on X. “It’d be one thing if he were a minimal bench player who came in every now & then. He started the majority of the playoffs & was crucial to the Cs success. Age doesn’t really matter when he’s still one of the best bigs in the league.”

Her statement underscores Al Horford’s significant contributions to the Celtics’ success and his enduring prowess on the court. Despite being one of the oldest players on the roster, Horford’s performance during the playoffs was nothing short of impressive. In the NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks, Horford played big minutes in all five games, averaging seven points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists. He was also remarkably efficient, shooting 52% from the field and an impressive 47.1% from the 3-point range.

Addressing the retirement rumors himself, Al Horford unequivocally denied any plans to retire. In an interview with TMZ Sports, as quoted by Boston.com, Horford expressed his enthusiasm for continuing his career and aiming for more championships with the Celtics.

“I have made my decision; there’s no question about it. I don’t know why there’s speculation out there that I’m retiring. I’m still playing, and I’m very excited for next season,” Horford said. “I think it’s us enjoying this moment right now, and then we get back to work. This group is special; we have so much to offer. And, like you said, I’ve done it at the college level, and I think we can do it again here.”

Horford’s confidence and commitment to the Celtics are evident. With his experience and leadership, he believes that the team can build on their recent success and potentially secure back-to-back championships. Currently under contract, Horford will enter the final year of his 2-year, $19.5 million deal next season, and his presence will undoubtedly be a cornerstone for the Celtics as they look to defend their title.

The retirement rumors surrounding Al Horford reflect a common narrative in sports where the achievements of veteran players often lead to speculation about their future. However, Horford’s performance this season has demonstrated that age is just a number when it comes to his abilities on the court. His leadership and experience have been vital for the Celtics, particularly in the high-pressure environment of the playoffs.

Anna Horford’s defense of her brother highlights the often overlooked but crucial role that family support plays in an athlete’s career. Her vocal support and Al Horford’s own statements provide a clear message: Horford is far from finished. As the Celtics prepare for the next season, Horford’s commitment and determination will be key factors in their pursuit of further success. The speculation about his retirement may have been premature, but it has also served to underscore the respect and admiration that both fans and analysts have for his enduring career.
