Bona started his basketball career at Prolific Prep high school in Napa, California, where he was a five-star prospect and a McDonald’s All-American. He took his talent to UCLA and spent two seasons honing his skills. During his freshman year, Bona had an average of 7.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game. He made it to the Pac-12 All-Defensive team and was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year due to his exceptional defensive abilities.
In his second year, Bona saw a marked improvement in his performance. On average, he scored 12.4 points, grabbed 5.9 rebounds, made 1.8 blocks, and recorded 1.1 steals per game.
