In a recent discussion, former Sixers sharpshooter JJ Redick shared thoughts on Tyrese Maxey and the team’s strategy for him. Tyrese Maxey, entering his second season with the Philadelphia 76ers, faces the challenge of personal development amidst uncertainties in the team’s backcourt.
Having experienced a similar situation during Ben Simmons’ absence in 2021, Maxey transitioned from a reserve to a starter. With the ongoing James Harden saga, there’s potential for Maxey to evolve from the third option to the focal point of the Sixers’ offense, particularly in playmaking.
According to former Sixers sharpshooter JJ Redick, this season should mark the full unleashing of Maxey, anticipating further growth from the young talent who has consistently improved since entering the NBA.
Redick shared his expectations on The Old Man and the Three podcast, stating, “I think in an even more prominent role, I think it’s natural that we’re going to see a scoring pop. As a product of that scoring pop, you are going to see more help. You’re going to potentially see the big higher-up. Then all of a sudden, he’s making plays, and potentially those assist numbers go up.”
Maxey, once criticized for his three-point shooting, has transformed into one of the NBA’s top sharpshooters, boasting a 43 percent success rate over the past two seasons.
In the upcoming season, the Sixers are keen on Maxey’s growth as a playmaker, aligning with the vision of their new head coach Nick Nurse. Redick highlighted Nurse’s emphasis on Maxey’s involvement in transition plays, increased shooting volume, and improvement in the pocket and skip passes to the corner.
While matching Harden’s impressive assist numbers is a formidable challenge, Maxey, if given the chance to lead and create, could elevate his playmaking skills.
