At the FIBA World Cup in Sydney, the United States will be hoping to win its fourth straight championship. Now if you count the Olympics as well, it’s the eighth consecutive World gold. Breanna Stewart, the Tokyo Olympic MVP, and two-time WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson lead the American team for the first time since 2000 without Sue Bird (retired) or Diana Taurasi (injured).
For the first time since 1994, the new-look team does not have anyone above 30. The last time it happened was when the United States started its dynasty at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Since the 2006 Worlds bronze-medal game, the Americans have won 52 straight games between the Worlds and the Olympics.
The main opponent of the United States, host nation Australia, and Olympic silver medalist Japan are featured on the roster. Nigeria, which lost to the United States in Tokyo by nine points in the closest game of any opponent, isn’t there because the team’s federation withdrew due to problems with governance. Second-placed Spain in the world didn’t make the cut.
