After a thrilling competition, Spain defeated France 88-76 on Sunday to win the FIBA EuroBasket 2022 gold medal. Spain won the EuroBasket competition handily, going 8-1 overall after defeating France in the championship game to win its first gold medal since 2015.
The Hernangomez brothers led Spain, which won Group “A” play earlier in the competition. Juancho Hernangomez, a big man for the Toronto Raptors, had a solid performance, finishing with 27 points, five rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Willy Hernangomez, a center for the Pelicans, earned the TISSOT MVP award for EuroBasket 2022 and contributed 14 points and 8 rebounds in the victory.
Willy Hernangomez: MVP and Man of the Moment
With 17.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, Willy Hernangomez was crowned the tournament’s MVP. Evan Fournier of the New York Knicks led France with 23 points and two assists, and Rudy Gobert of the Minnesota Timberwolves added six points and six rebounds. But ultimately, their output simply wasn’t sufficient to win the gold for France.
“It’s hard to explain how I feel with words. I am very proud of my teammates, the coaching staff, the whole Spanish federation – from top to bottom,” Hernangomez said of Spain’s victory. “We much deserve this gold medal, the way we grew and developed through the tournament. It was something amazing. The trust that was inside the locker room was something special. I’m just so proud, so lucky to be around those guys. Because they trusted me from the beginning. I’m just thankful to be part of this amazing team.”
Spain’s Head Coach, Sergio Scariolo
Spain won its fourth gold medal in EuroBasket history with this triumph, all of which have come since 2009. Spain won the title in 2009, 2011, and 2015 as well. Sergio Scariolo was quite pleased with his team’s achievement in this year’s competition and was also responsible for all four of those gold medals.
“It’s easy to be happy as a basketball coach. We went into this championship ranked eighth in the power rankings, and we managed to climb step by step,” Scariolo said of his team. “We left behind unbelievable teams – this last one, an incredible team full of top-level players, all-stars — at this extremely high-level EuroBasket. It’s amazing to see the final standings and to see we are above all those great teams.
Due to their fourth title, Spain is now the team with the third most EuroBasket title wins. Only Russia and Yogoslavia have won more titles, Both of which aren’t functional anymore.
