Stephen Curry and James Harden both started playing professionally in 2009, yet their influence on basketball has varied greatly. During The Draymond Green Show, Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas discussed his views on their legacies. Thomas attributed a change in the way basketball teams play to Curry, highlighting his impact on team culture.
Thomas stated that Steph revolutionized the game. The style of play teams desire now—shooting three-pointers, constant movement without the ball—is all because of Steph. If you are unable to shoot, you are in a less favorable position. Curry’s innovative style propelled the Golden State Warriors to win four titles and sparked a league-wide trend towards outside shooting and passing.
Harden’s Individual Brilliance
On the flip side, Thomas commended James Harden for his groundbreaking style of individual performance. Thomas stated that James altered the way players desired to improve their skills. All the isos, stepbacks, handles, and foul-drawing are part of James’ game. Young players were mesmerized by Harden’s playing style, aspiring to emulate his scoring prowess, as he consistently put up high-scoring performances in the 40s and 50s during games.
Harden’s success in winning MVP awards and scoring titles has not resulted in team success comparable to Curry’s. Although Harden made it to the Finals with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2012, he has not been able to get back to the championship game. At the age of 35, he is still chasing that goal with the Los Angeles Clippers.
A New Era Begins
In Thomas’ opinion, James and Steph are considered the top two players of our generation due to their shared influence. “They revolutionized the game for us young individuals.” However, he pointed out that a fresh group of skilled individuals is prepared to assume control. “Recognition given to them for their accomplishments, but now it is our turn.”
Curry and Harden will be remembered as two of the most impactful players in recent NBA history.
