Yuki Kawamura, aged 23, secured his place on the Memphis Grizzlies roster with a strong showing in the preseason and signing a two-way contract. Yuki Kawamura, who stands at a height of 5’8″, is gaining attention as the NBA’s smallest current player.

A Remarkable Journey to the NBA

Kawamura’s path to the NBA is one-of-a-kind. Following his highly successful run with the Yokohama B-Corsairs in Japan’s B.League, including being awarded MVP for the 2022-23 season, he signed with the Grizzlies in September 2024. Recognized for his remarkable abilities. He maintained a scoring average of 19.1 points, 8.1 assists, and 3.1 rebounds per game while playing in Japan. In the 2024 Olympics, he represented Japan’s national team and had an impressive game. Scoring 29 points in a narrow defeat against France.

Preseason Standout

Kawamura’s talents have been showcased during the Grizzlies’ preseason. He impressed with his exceptional passing ability while averaging 3.4 points and 4.2 assists in 15 minutes per game. Even though he is small, Kawamura’s ability to see the game and create opportunities has gained him recognition, and his teammates. Including Ja Morant, have expressed their support for him. Especially during his contract signing celebration.

What’s Next for Kawamura

Despite likely playing most of the season with the Grizzlies’ G League team. Kawamura’s two-way contract ensures he remains on the NBA’s radar. The Grizzlies will start their 2024-25 season versus the Utah Jazz, with the possibility of Kawamura being promoted as a point guard if necessary.
Yuki Kawamura’s tale demonstrates that being short does not prevent success in the NBA.
