Rutgers’ impressive freshmen Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey left a lasting impact during their first game against St. John’s on Thursday evening. Harper, a 6-foot-6 guard and the son of NBA veteran Ron Harper Sr., demonstrated his skill and poise in scoring 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Ace Bailey, a forward standing at 6-foot-10, was the top scorer with 25 points, making 4-of-9 three-pointers.

Pitino’s High Praise for Harper and Bailey

Rick Pitino, coach of St. John’s and Hall of Famer in Naismith, had nothing but compliments for Harper’s mature style of play. Pitino said Harper plays like a senior, despite being a freshman, because he is very composed. He went so far as to liken Harper to Knicks icon Clyde Frazier. Pitino also emphasized Bailey’s natural ability, saying, “And Ace Bailey simply possesses fantastic talent.”

NBA Scouts Take Notice

Over 20 NBA scouts, along with general managers from the Nets, Raptors, and Magic, were present at the game. ESPN commentator Jonathan Givony identified Harper and Bailey as possible top choices for the 2025 NBA Draft. A scout noted that NBA talent evaluators will be closely watching Rutgers and Duke this season, particularly focusing on top prospect Cooper Flagg.

The Future Looks Bright for Rutgers

Rutgers coach Steve Pikiell and guard Jeremiah Williams are optimistic about their youthful talents. Williams expressed that they allow others to do their own thing when they go out. Harper and Bailey demonstrated flashes of their talent through impressive displays, such as Harper’s smooth behind-the-back dribble and Bailey’s numerous three-point shots.

Learning and Growing

Despite making a strong start, tiredness appeared to kick in towards the end of the match. Harper made a costly mistake with the ball in the last minute. Nevertheless, Pitino maintains his confidence in their abilities, stating, “They have earned the ranking they are receiving… they will become an outstanding basketball team.”
