Christian Koloko, previously with the Toronto Raptors, has decided to join the Los Angeles Lakers, according to a report from Shams Charania of The Athletic. Following his release from the Raptors in January 2024 in the trade involving Pascal Siakam, Koloko’s prospects in the NBA seemed doubtful. He had been benched because of a severe blood clot problem, after previously being sidelined for an unspecified period due to breathing issues.

Waiting for Clearance

Koloko must wait for approval from the NBA’s fitness panel before he can participate in any games or training sessions, however. The Lakers signed the 24-year-old in preparation for the 2024-25 season. Koloko had attracted attention from other teams, such as the Los Angeles Clippers, Toronto Raptors, and San Antonio Spurs. Despite the worries about his health, the Lakers remain optimistic that Koloko can have a significant impact once he is given the all-clear.

A Promising Rookie Season

In the 2022 NBA Draft, Koloko was chosen by the Toronto Raptors as the No. 33 pick. In his first year, Koloko displayed potential, scoring 3.1 points, grabbing 2.9 rebounds, and blocking 1.0 shots in 58 games. He also had the highest net rating among all Raptors who participated in at least 30 games. Showcasing his ability as a player who excels on both ends of the court.

Adding Depth to the Lakers’ Frontcourt

If given the green light, Koloko will strengthen the Lakers’ frontcourt. That is already filled with solid defenders such as Anthony Davis and Jarred Vanderbilt. The presence of Koloko provides the Lakers with added depth and defense. Serving as a valuable asset for the upcoming season.

Supporters are excitedly anticipating Koloko’s possible comeback on the court. Also with optimism that his career will bounce back following a challenging year.
