One NBA executive is advising for caution despite Cooper Flagg being seen as the top college basketball prospect for the 2025 NBA Draft. The executive informed ESPN’s Jonathan Givony that errors occur when you become attached to a belief. The executive highlighted the importance of assessing Flagg’s potential as a top offensive player or impactful role player, with potential for unexpected developments in the upcoming season.

Flagg’s High School Dominance

Flagg has been in the limelight for a while, excelling as a senior at Montverde Academy. He demonstrated his versatile skills by averaging 16.1 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks. Being chosen for the USA Basketball’s Select Team for the 2024 Olympics caused quite a stir, given that he was the lone college player to receive the recognition. At only 17 years old, Flagg showed he could compete with NBA stars.

Historical Lessons in Draft Surprises

Analogies have been drawn to previous draft situations where the top pick was not the initial favorite. In 2022, Chet Holmgren initially held the lead position before Paolo Banchero ultimately took over. In the same way, Brandon Miller surpassed Scoot Henderson in the 2023 draft, demonstrating the rapid changes that can occur in the months preceding draft day.

The Challenge for Flagg

If the NBA Draft for 2025 happened now, Flagg would probably be chosen first. Nonetheless, as the season progresses, scouts will carefully examine his game for any potential flaws. The examination may uncover a hidden aspect of his success in high school. At the moment, Flagg is still the top choice, but the path to the draft is not finished yet.
