Carrying, also known as “palming the ball” or “turning the ball over,” is a foul in basketball. It occurs when the player handling the ball places his hand on the bottom half of the ball or flicks their hand underneath the lower half of the basketball while dribbling, causing the ball a brief rest. A violation occurs if the ball handler keeps moving their feet or dribbling afterward.
In other words, the ball handlers are not allowed to move their feet or dribble while pushing the ball up or keeping it from falling, having their hands under it. Otherwise, the referee will call it carrying.
Variations of a Carry in Basketball
Carrying has been categorized according to the player’s method of handling the ball. Following are the two situations where a referee gives a verdict for carrying.
Double Dribble
The majority of basketball games frequently involve this kind of violation. A double dribble happens when a player gets his hand under the ball while dribbling, stopping the ball momentarily. The player will commit carrying if he continues dribbling afterward.
Traveling
Traveling is the brief rest of the ball when a player gets his hand underneath the bottom half of the ball and decides to move forward with their feet rather than dribbling. Some referees refer to this activity as carrying or traveling.
Penalty for Carrying
Travelling and Double dribble have the same penalty of a turnover, and the referee will give the ball possession to the opposing team near the spot where the mistake got made.
