In a devastating blow to Japan’s basketball team, Rui Hachimura’s injury has ruled him out of the 2024 Paris Olympics after he sustained a calf injury during a tense match against France. The Los Angeles Lakers star, 26, who was making his second Olympic appearance after competing in Tokyo’s delayed 2020 Games, now faces an unexpected setback.
Hachimura’s Injury Shakes Japan’s Basketball Team
The Japan Basketball Association confirmed that an MRI revealed a significant injury to Hachimura’s left calf muscle, sidelining him for the remainder of the Summer Games. Standing at 6-foot-8, the forward experienced discomfort following the thrilling game against France on July 30, which ended in a crushing 94-90 overtime defeat.
Hachimura, expressing his disappointment, announced he would immediately step away for treatment but assured fans he’d be cheering on his team in their final group stage match against Brazil on August 2 at Lille’s Pierre Mauroy Stadium. “Due to the urgent need for treatment, I regret to inform you that I must leave the team, adhering to NBA/FIBA rules. My heartfelt thanks to all our supporters,” he shared, his words heavy with regret.
This setback adds to Hachimura’s history of injuries, despite his impressive regular season with the Lakers in 2023-24, where he played a career-high 68 games. The talented player’s exit is a significant loss for Japan’s basketball aspirations.
Japan’s Rocky Start in the Olympics
Japan’s journey in the 2024 Olympics has been anything but smooth. They suffered a humiliating 97-77 defeat against Germany in their opener on July 27. The clash against France, however, was their chance for redemption. Japan was tantalizingly close to a monumental upset, leading in the final moments of regulation. Yet, a controversial foul call during a three-pointer by French guard Matthew Strazel led to a game-tying four-point play, propelling France to an overtime victory.
Adding to the drama, Hachimura was ejected with 8:31 left in the fourth quarter after a second unsportsmanlike foul. Despite his impressive 24 points and three rebounds in 28 minutes, his exit marked the end of his Olympic run.
With both Japan and Brazil winless in Group B, their upcoming match is a battle for survival. Only the top two third-place teams across the groups advance to the quarterfinals, leaving Japan’s hopes hanging by a thread.
