Every superstar NBA player is continuously tied to “legacy” discussions and is constantly compared to Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and other game-changing legends. Kevin Durant often seems to be on the losing end of these debates.
After Steph Curry and the Warriors defeated the Celtics for their fourth title in eight years on Thursday night, social media shifted its focus away from the game and back to Curry’s old colleague.
“How does it feel to not be loved by any of the fans of the team you won back to back titles with all because you couldn’t help yourself from throwing shade at everyone in the organization whenever the opportunity arose?” one fan tweeted.
Durant shot back, “Love will get u killed.”
In response to a fan who suggested his legacy had “died,” Durant said, “I’ve been dead since July 4th, 2016” the date he revealed he would join the Warriors.
Durant, who won two rings with the Warriors, joined the team in 2016 after they won the title in 2015. After the Raptors defeated the Warriors in the 2019 NBA Finals, he left in free agency to join the Brooklyn Nets. Curry now has four championships, two with and two without Durant.
Durant and the Warriors don’t appear to have any bad blood, as he complimented them in his tweets. But the debate will undoubtedly remain until Durant wins a title without Curry.
Durant, whose team was eliminated by the Celtics during the first round of this year’s playoffs, is under contract with Brooklyn until 2025-2026.
