Raptors' Deadline Drama: Anunoby to Miami Heat for Herro and Two First-Round Selections?

In a surprising turn of events leading up to the NBA trade season, insiders are buzzing with speculation over a potential blockbuster trade involving Toronto Raptors’ forward OG Anunoby. The Raptors, known for being active participants in trade talks, could be considering a move that would send Anunoby to the Miami Heat in exchange for Tyler Herro and two coveted first-round picks.

As the December 15th deadline approaches, marking the official start of the NBA trade season, teams are gearing up to engage in discussions that could reshape their rosters. The Toronto Raptors, with several players on expiring contracts, find themselves at the center of numerous trade rumors. Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, shedding light on the Raptors’ potential strategy, indicates that Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby, and Gary Trent Jr. are among the top trade candidates.

Siakam’s Trade Status: Assessing Mannix’s Insights on Toronto’s Hierarchy

Mannix, speaking on the Crossover Podcast, suggests that Siakam might be the primary trade target for the Raptors, considering his age and contractual status. However, an intriguing proposal emerges with Anunoby, as insiders discuss the possibility of a deal with the Miami Heat. The suggested trade package includes the promising Tyler Herro and not one but two first-round picks, adding substantial value to the Raptors’ potential haul.

“I think Herro and two firsts get it done. I think that would be a good haul,” Mannix asserts confidently.

While Herro, 23, has faced setbacks this season due to an ankle injury, his offensive prowess is undeniable. Averaging an impressive 22.9 points and shooting at a 41% clip from beyond the arc in eight games this year, Herro could inject new life into Toronto’s sometimes stagnant half-court offense. Although he may not match Anunoby’s defensive prowess, Herro’s offensive shot-creating abilities present an enticing prospect for the Raptors.

The trade, however, comes with its set of challenges for the Miami Heat, particularly regarding their first-round pick situation. Complicated by a lottery-protected 2025 first-round pick owed to the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Heat face restrictions on trading their 2024, 2026, and 2027 first-round picks outright until the 2025 pick conveys. Navigating these restrictions, the Heat would need to be willing to part with their 2028 and 2030 first-round picks to make the proposed deal viable.

As the trade season unfolds, this potential exchange looms as a headline-grabbing move that could reshape the fortunes of both the Toronto Raptors and the Miami Heat. NBA fans are eagerly anticipating whether this speculated trade will materialize, adding an element of suspense to the evolving landscape of the league.
