Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey has been honoured with the 2024 NBA Sportsmanship Award, an accolade that recognizes a player who best exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship on the court. This award, voted on by NBA players from a list of nominees curated by team executives, is a testament to Maxey’s positive demeanour and conduct throughout the season.
Maxey learned of his win from his parents, a fitting moment for a player known for his familial ties and infectious positivity. This season, Maxey was thrust into a more significant role amid the ongoing James Harden situation. He seized the opportunity, delivering a breakout performance by averaging 25.9 points and 6.2 assists per game, both career highs, and earning his first All-Star selection.
Despite the increased responsibilities and pressures, Maxey maintained his consistently positive attitude, which has endeared him to teammates, opponents, and fans alike. His commendable sportsmanship and on-court conduct have now been formally recognized by his peers.
Tyrese Maxey is set to become a restricted free agent this summer, and given his stellar performance, he is expected to receive a max contract offer from the 76ers.
In the voting for the Sportsmanship Award, veteran Miami Heat big man Kevin Love finished second, followed by Jarrett Allen of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Harrison Barnes of the Sacramento Kings, and Tre Jones of the San Antonio Spurs.
