In the aftermath of a heated showdown with the Los Angeles Clippers, the Philadelphia 76ers’ coach Nick Nurse and Kelly Oubre Jr. (the player) are feeling the financial repercussions. The NBA’s announcement of $50,000 fines for both Nick Nurse and Kelly Oubre Jr., stemming from their aggressive interactions with game officials during Wednesday’s game, has reverberated across the basketball landscape.
76ers: Nick Nurse and Kelly Oubre Jr. penalized by $50K
Oubre’s altercation started after a bad call when he attempted to shoot a three-pointer which would have probably won the game for the Warriors but the player was not awarded a foul by the referees. A nurse heroically flew onto the site astride his fiery majesty, all the rage taking on the referees that instead required the presence of the assistant coaches to pacify him. More interestingly, Oubre was arguing with referees in an apparent attempt to calm himself but that did nothing to stop him from being taken out.
On-court, Kevin Scott, the team’s head coach, admitted that after review, the shooter fouled him. He, however, put emphasis on the fact that there was a slight deviation by the defender (who fouled). Addressing the press guys after the game, “O” remarked on the nature of his outburst as being a function of both “the heat of the moment” and the “intensity” of the game. He apologized for his behavior and he pointed out that his own effort to do right by people and by himself will help him to fix his position.
During the push for playoffs, 76ers have been plunged into the crisis, whose star player Embiid had been suffering for the injury. With a downgraded status of the eight in the Eastern Conference, players can hardly keep their nerves in check as the main objective remains to qualify not only for play-offs but also to avoid playing the play-in tournament.
Finally, the announcement of the arrival of Embiid for the remaining season to the team is a forward step which will bring new life and energy to them as they prepare for what is coming. The schedule has only nine regular-season games left, and this means a dramatic denouement for the Sixers. The team is hoping that the return of their main star will serve as a stepping-stone into a quality performance in the playoffs.
