As the New York Knicks’ dynamic broadcasting duo, Mike Breen and Walt “Clyde” Frazier, mark their 25th on-air anniversary, they share insights into the enduring chemistry that has defined their partnership. Since their first MSG Network broadcast on February 5, 1999, during a Knicks vs. Orlando Magic game, Breen and Frazier have become an iconic presence in NBA broadcasting.
A Dream Partnership Realized
In an interview with Peter Botte of the New York Post, Mike Breen expresses his initial disbelief at partnering with Walt Frazier, one of his childhood heroes. The prospect of working alongside a Hall of Famer like Frazier left Breen initially nervous but ultimately grateful. Breen acknowledges Frazier’s impact on his confidence, stating, “He didn’t know it at the time. But I was so nervous… Here’s this Hall of Famer, I’m a young broadcaster, and for him to bring me in and respect and treat me with such kindness gave me all the confidence in the world.”
Frazier, an NBA legend in his own right, highlights the joy he found in working with Breen. Despite Frazier’s established status, he appreciated the opportunity to collaborate with Breen and emphasized that the passage of 25 years doesn’t feel like a significant span. Frazier recalls Breen’s encouragement early on, saying, “When I first met Mike, I didn’t know anything about the adulation that he had for me. … Mike gave me an opportunity to articulate more than the normal color guy. … That gave me a lot of confidence when he said that.”
A Lasting Partnership
While Frazier has reduced his participation in road games in recent years, he has no intentions of retiring. In fact, he expresses his plans to continue working with Breen “as long as he can.” The Knicks, in recognition of this remarkable milestone, will honor Breen and Frazier’s 25th on-air anniversary before, during, and after Tuesday’s broadcast of the Knicks’ game against the Grizzlies.
Someone I think about that deserves this run is Mike Breen and Clyde Frazier. There are gems like this he will deliver and no one is better. https://t.co/UNTu7eJ1wH
