Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed Against NBA's Top Pick Brandon Miller

A wrongful death lawsuit has been initiated in federal court against Charlotte Hornets rookie Brandon Miller and two others by the mother of a woman who tragically lost her life near the University of Alabama. Decarla Raietta Heard filed this suit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama Western Division. The lawsuit names Miller, former Crimson Tide player Darius Miles, and Michael Davis. Heard’s daughter, 23-year-old Jamea Jonae Harris, was fatally shot on January 15 in the early morning.

While both Miles and Davis face capital murder charges, Miller, the second overall pick in the recent NBA draft, is described as a cooperating witness and was not charged with a crime. The suit, represented by Birmingham attorneys Kirby D. Farris and Malia D. Tartt, alleges that these men should have foreseen the harm caused by bringing a dangerous weapon to the dispute and discharging it. They are seeking a jury trial.

Both Miller and freshman Jaden Bradley, who has since transferred to Arizona, were present at the scene. Police testimony suggests that Miller provided Miles with a gun. However, Miller’s attorney has maintained that Miller was merely on his way to pick up Miles and wasn’t aware of any criminal intentions involving the firearm. The attorney emphasized that Miller did not handle the gun and was unaware that it would be used for illegal purposes.
