The Golden State Warriors might have continued their dominance in the NBA, possibly adding more championships to their legacy, had Kevin Durant remained with the team. After joining the Warriors in 2016, Durant played a pivotal role in securing back-to-back championships in 2017 and 2018. However, in July 2019, Durant made the decision to leave Golden State for the Brooklyn Nets, a move that left some, including his own mother, Wanda Durant, with mixed feelings.
Wanda Durant, along with Steph Curry’s mother, Sonya, recently shared their thoughts on Kevin’s departure during an episode of TV One’s “Raising Fame.” In the candid conversation, Wanda admitted that she wasn’t thrilled about her son’s decision to leave the Warriors.
“I was kind of mad at him when he left at first,” Sonya confessed to Wanda during their discussion.
Wanda echoed these sentiments, expressing her belief that had Durant stayed with the Warriors, they would have continued to dominate the league. “I didn’t really want him to go either … man, we would have had 20 rings by now,” Wanda remarked. “We would have had 20 rings by now, and it was about [eight] years ago, that’s how cold they were.”
After Durant’s departure, the Warriors experienced a significant shift. Following their loss to the Toronto Raptors in the 2019 NBA Finals, Golden State missed the playoffs for the next two seasons. However, they managed to reclaim their championship status in 2022, securing their fourth title in eight seasons.
Reflecting on what could have been, it’s clear that Durant’s presence on the Warriors might have led to even more success. While the team eventually found its way back to the top, one can only wonder how many more championships they might have won had Durant chosen to stay in Golden State.
