Sibling of NBA Star Faces Prison in Deadly DUI Tragedy

The judicial gavel has struck down on Coban Porter, once a promising player for the University of Denver basketball team and the Sibling of NBA Star Faces Prison, Michael Porter Jr. His sentencing followed a tragic DUI crash in Colorado last year that claimed the life of Katharina Rothman, 42, and left her passenger severely injured.

The Cavanaugh District Court sentenced Porter in Denver District Court Judge Ericka Englert, who handed down the verdict: six years for vehicular manslaughter combined with an additional two years for vehicular assault. Porter, by plea agreement in February, has been sent to serve simultaneous five-year sentences for both charges, which will eventually bring the darkest episode in his life to an end.

night of January 22, 2023, the approaching date of Porter’s crash on the University of Denver campus, was portrayed to us very clearly in these reports. At a fast speed, Porter crossed a red traffic light, colliding with the vehicle of the victim. The only survivor in the car was the Uber driver, Rothman, who did not have a chance to make it out of there alive. Strong winds were blowing against the cab, forcing it to make an emergency stop in the middle of the highway, and the resulting accident ended the lives of two people,  the Uber driver and her passenger.

The blood alcohol content of Porter was measured at 0.19, a startling number for sure and more than twice the legal measure. This night of booze led to his death and effectively was the end of what could have been a promising athletic career and a big blow to families and friends who were left behind.

Before he received the judgment, Porter told the court with regretful words that he knew deeply and should not be making the irrevocable mistake he made. “I am sorry for my reckless act, which I cannot take back,” he averred, admitting to flouting the rules of universal care and humanity and causing irreparable damage. Although his apologetic tone has provided a bandage to ease the pain in the girl’s family’s wound, time cannot be reversed and the loss can never be recovered.

The opportunity to learn about Coban was made available through his brother’s brother, Michael Porter Jr., a professional NBA player who had him as one of his siblings, despite the legal turmoil that was surrounding him. Although he tried to suppress it, he constantly confronted the story’s cold truth as he confessed to being utterly in shock and heartbroken.

The dice of justice were cast in one case, and they came out in the open in another twisted line of the Porter family. Only days before that, Coban and Michael’s own younger brother, Jontay Porter, faced the embarrassment of a lifetime with the drastic and concerning ban from the NBA because of the allegations of him sharing confidential information with other punters to help them increase their betting odds, with the family reputation taking a hard hit.

After the legal dust settles and one brother is accountable for the consequences of his actions, the Porter family is pressured to embrace the aftermath by praying for mending in the craziness.
