Ricky Rubio Announces End of NBA Career Due to Mental Health Focus

Cleveland Cavaliers’ veteran guard Ricky Rubio has declared the conclusion of his 12-season NBA career as he steps away to prioritize his mental health. Known for his exceptional playmaking skills and positive influence on and off the court, Rubio’s departure comes amid ongoing struggles.

Career Highlights and Mentoring Impact

Ricky Rubio, renowned for his vision on the basketball court, not only excelled as a playmaker but also contributed significantly to the positive team culture. His absence will undoubtedly be felt by teammates, coaches, and fans. The 33-year-old, with a distinguished international career with Spain, emphasized that while he is “doing much better and getting better every day,” his decision to end his NBA journey is final.

Agreement on Contract Buyout

Rubio’s announcement follows an agreement with the Cleveland Cavaliers on a contract buyout. The team will gain financial relief from the $6.1 million owed for this year and the $6.4 million deal for 2024-25.

Impactful Tenure in Cleveland

Koby Altman, the Cavaliers’ president of basketball operations, praised Rubio’s impact, citing his instrumental role in the team’s 22-win improvement during the 2021-22 season. Rubio’s willingness to mentor younger players and his leadership qualities contributed significantly to the Cavaliers’ success.

Overcoming Injuries and Setbacks

Rubio faced challenges over the past two seasons, recovering from a torn knee ligament that limited his playing time and explosiveness. The veteran guard, who did not report to training camp this season, has been candid about his mental health struggles, expressing that July 30th was one of the toughest nights of his life. His decision to step away from his professional career came as a realization of his mental health situation and a commitment to regaining control.

Advocacy for Mental Health

Rubio aims to share his experiences to support others facing similar situations and, for the time being, keeps the details private out of respect for his family and himself. The veteran guard had a significant impact on the Cavaliers in his first season, mentoring young players and advocating for mental health alongside friend and teammate Kevin Love.

International Basketball Legacy

Having started his basketball journey as a 14-year-old prodigy, Rubio’s international accomplishments include winning Olympic medals and being named FIBA World Cup MVP in 2019. Drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2009, he spent seven seasons with the team before stints with other NBA teams.

Rubio expressed gratitude to all his teams, especially Cleveland, acknowledging the support and understanding shown by the organization, including Koby Altman and coach J.B. Bickerstaff.

“My last home,” Rubio wrote. “I know the way things ended have been tough. I could never have imagined the year would develop this way, but you have an amazing organization, with Koby and JB, who have been extremely respectful and understanding of my situation and caring for me as a person.”
