On Saturday, ex-NBA player Cedi Osman decided to join Greek club Panathinaikos, essentially concluding his seven-year stint in the NBA. The Los Angeles Lakers had a challenging offseason where they failed to sign important free agents, like Klay Thompson, who ultimately decided to join the Dallas Mavericks. Regrettably, the obstacles did not end there.
Osman Turns Down the Lakers
Osman, who showed potential at the beginning of his career but has faced difficulties in the last few seasons, rejected an offer to attend a training camp with the Lakers. Nikola Miloradovic from EuroHoops reported that Osman turned down the offer because he wasn’t assured of making the season roster. He, on the other hand, ensured a more stable and profitable agreement in a foreign country.
Why This Isn’t a Big Loss for the Lakers
Although some Lakers fans viewed Osman’s decision negatively, it’s not as terrible as it may appear. The Lakers currently have 15 contracts locked in, suggesting their roster is probably final for the upcoming season. Despite attending the training camp, Osman’s likelihood of making the final roster was still low.
Osman’s case hasn’t been supported by his recent performances either. Last season with the Spurs, his average was 6.8 points per game, the lowest since his rookie year. Even though some people thought his friendship with LeBron James might have helped, it wouldn’t have been a sure thing for him to make the team.
A Smart Move for Osman
In the end, Osman’s decision to go back to Europe was a wise one as it led to a bigger guaranteed payment and an opportunity to rejuvenate his career. The Lakers shouldn’t worry about not acquiring Cedi Osman. Having already filled their roster. Their attention is now on the talent they have secured as they get ready for the upcoming season.
