Toronto Raptors governor Larry Tanenbaum has been voted in for another term as the head of the NBA’s board of governors. This is a major milestone, since Tanenbaum is the inaugural Canadian to occupy this esteemed position.
A Long-Standing Leader in Toronto Sports
Tanenbaum has been the Raptors’ governor since 1998, managing the team’s development into one of the NBA’s most highly regarded franchises. Additionally, he also has similar roles with the NHL’s Maple Leafs and MLS’s Toronto FC, in addition to his position with the Raptors.
The Toronto native, who is 79 years old, also serves as the chairman of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), the owner of all three teams. Under his guidance, MLSE has transformed these teams into significant competitors in their respective sports leagues.

In May 2024, Larry Tanenbaum achieved another milestone as the WNBA granted Toronto its inaugural expansion team, marking the league’s initial franchise beyond American borders. Tanenbaum’s Kilmer Sports Ventures will operate this new team, starting in the 2026 season.
