The Los Angeles Lakers’ coaching search continues to unravel dramatically as reports suggest that the franchise is in negotiations with UConn head coach Dan Hurley. This development comes after the Lakers parted ways with Darvin Ham last month, setting off a flurry of speculation about who would take the reins of the storied franchise. Hurley, who has recently led the Huskies to two consecutive national titles, is reportedly being courted by the Lakers in what could be a massive deal. However, not everyone is convinced about the suitability or the process behind this potential appointment.
The situation took a public turn when Adrian Wojnarowski broke the news about the ongoing negotiations between the Lakers and Hurley. The report has generated considerable buzz, drawing reactions from fans and analysts alike. Among the voices questioning the Lakers’ approach is Fox analyst Skip Bayless, who expressed his skepticism on Thursday’s edition of FS1’s Undisputed.
“This does not pass the smell test for me,” Bayless declared, pointing out that betting sites had been heavily favoring JJ Redick for the position. “Because all the gambling sites have reported for at least two weeks that JJ Redick is a done deal.”
Bayless elaborated on his doubts by outlining the sequence of events that had unfolded during the Lakers’ coaching search. “Why would you go through multiple interviews with JJ Redick, and then [James] Borrego, and then Sam Cassell? Reportedly, multiple with a couple of them, and at least one with the others?” he questioned. His commentary suggests a perceived lack of transparency or perhaps a last-minute change in the Lakers’ strategy.

The speculation that Redick had initially been the frontrunner is further fueled by Bayless’ interpretation of Wojnarowski’s report. “Woj just reported that the primary focus, the target from Day 1, was Dan Hurley. I just find that a little hard to believe, ’cause maybe these things didn’t go so well; maybe they had JJ in their sights,” Bayless opined. He theorized that protracted negotiations with Redick might have led to an impasse, prompting the Lakers to pivot to Hurley.
Bayless added, “They could have talked and talked and talked it into oblivion until he finally said, ‘You know what? There are too many strings attached; you got too many in-office politics.'” He alluded to internal factions within the Lakers organization, mentioning the “Kobe clique” and the “Magic clique,” which might have dissuaded Redick from committing to the role. “Maybe JJ finally said, ‘You know what? I got a really good gig, I’m really enjoying my podcast and my television, and why would I inflict this upon myself?'”
Interestingly, LeBron James, the Lakers’ superstar, has previously expressed his admiration for Hurley’s coaching acumen. Back in April, while Darvin Ham was still the Lakers’ head coach, LeBron lauded Hurley during an appearance on JJ Redick’s podcast, *The Old Man and the Three. He described Hurley as “so DAMN GOOD!!! Along with his staff. Super creative with their O! Love it,” and also took to Twitter to praise the coach.

This endorsement from LeBron adds another layer to the unfolding drama, as it indicates a level of respect and perhaps a willingness to work with Hurley. The potential synergy between LeBron James and Hurley could be a key factor in the Lakers’ decision-making process.
However, as the Lakers’ coaching search for a new head coach continues, it remains to be seen whether Hurley will indeed be the one to fill the position. The narrative around this decision is emblematic of the complexities and pressures facing high-profile NBA franchises. With multiple candidates having been considered and the involvement of influential figures like LeBron, the Lakers’ eventual choice will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for the team’s future.
