Kyle Kuzma, the forward for the Washington Wizards, has voiced his disapproval of the frequent changes in Nike’s NBA city edition jerseys. The NBA, in collaboration with Nike, has introduced City Edition jerseys for teams for the sixth year in a row, but the latest designs have sparked some resistance. Kuzma expressed his candid opinion on Monday, reacting to what seemed to be a leaked version of the Los Angeles Clippers’ jerseys.
In his view on Nike’s NBA city edition jerseys, the constant introduction of new jersey designs detracts from the cherished traditions of the sport. He took to Twitter to state, “Nike is diminishing the nostalgia associated with jerseys; every year brings a new jersey, eroding the essence of brand identity.”
In the past, NBA teams typically had just two sets of jerseys, one for home games and another for away games. Today, the categories have evolved, with “Association” and “Icon” replacing home and away designations, respectively. Classic jerseys serve as throwbacks, while City Edition and Statement Edition jerseys offer alternate styles.
Each jersey boasts a distinctive design, and teams even provide schedules to inform fans of when they will wear each version.
Kuzma’s ability to openly critique Nike is due to his status as a Puma athlete, having signed a five-year contract with the brand in 2019. Even Nike-sponsored athletes are not obligated to endorse every aspect of the brand’s offerings, as demonstrated by a recent instance where Phoenix Suns‘ Kevin Durant provided a lukewarm review of his own Nike KD 16 shoes earlier this month.
