NBA icon Kevin Garnett expresses deep affection for Kobe Bryant, intending to honor his memory by dedicating a future son to the late Lakers legend.
During a recent appearance on “The Stephen A. Smith Show,” Garnett shared his profound admiration for Bryant and their personal connection. “He understood the game when he stepped onto that court, and that’s something I cherished about him. I miss Kobe every single day,” Garnett remarked emotionally. “We keep his memory alive, celebrating him as if he’s still with us, and that’s something I truly appreciate,” he added. “If I am blessed with a son in the future, I don’t know when or how, but I intend to dedicate him to Kobe.”
Garnett and Bryant both joined the NBA directly from high school, with Garnett entering a year ahead of Bryant. Their paths crossed numerous times on the court, notably clashing in the 2008 and 2009 NBA Finals. While the Celtics secured the victory in the first encounter, the Lakers claimed redemption with the championship in 2009.
Tragically, Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven others lost their lives in a helicopter crash nearly four years ago. Despite the passage of time, Bryant’s legacy remains profoundly impactful.
Pau Gasol, another Lakers legend, paid tribute to Bryant during his Hall of Fame induction speech in August, crediting Bryant with his own success by stating, “I owe so much to you, brother.” Tributes to the five-time NBA champion extend beyond basketball, such as tennis star Novak Djokovic sporting a “Mamba Forever” shirt following his 24th Grand Slam title win in September.
