In 2020, the Los Angeles Lakers faced a critical decision that would shape their championship destiny: Dwight Howard or Joakim Noah. With Boogie Cousins’ ACL injury forcing the Lakers into a scramble for a replacement, the choice between Howard and Noah became a heated debate. This decision would later be known as “Joakim Noah’s Disappointment,” highlighting the missed opportunity for Noah to join the Lakers’ championship run.

During that season, the Lakers were already bolstered by Javale McGee, but his asthma limited his playtime to 20-25 minutes per game. The team needed a dependable big man with substantial experience, which led to the showdown between Howard and Noah. In a candid interview, Noah revealed his frustration: “I tried, but they picked Dwight Howard instead. You can’t beat that!”

Noah, with his superior leadership skills, seemed like a natural fit. Both players were 34 and dealing with various injuries, yet many felt Noah could offer more in the locker room. Despite Howard’s tumultuous past with the Lakers, having failed to make a lasting impact during his previous stint, it was clear that the Lakers’ management saw something special in him.

“Everything happens for a reason,” Noah reflected. “They were a great team. I think LeBron James did a really good job of leading that team, especially in the Bubble. Away from family, it was tough, but LeBron excelled.”

Despite his strong fit with the team’s culture, Noah found himself with the Clippers, but his tenure was short-lived, appearing in only five games before being waived. His career, once promising, ended with Noah returning to Chicago, where he was named an ambassador for the Bulls and has been a pillar in the community through his Noah’s Arc Foundation.

On the other hand, Howard seized his second chance with the Lakers. In the 2019-20 season, he played 69 games, averaging 7.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game, all while coming off the bench. Howard’s performance was pivotal in the Lakers’ championship run, earning him a spot in the Top 10 for Sixth Man of the Year voting and, most importantly, the coveted NBA title.

This decision sparked debates and left many wondering: Did the Lakers make the right choice? As Howard celebrated his championship, Noah reflected on his career, recognizing the twists of fate that led him to different paths.

The Lakers’ choice of Howard over Noah continues to stir controversy, revealing the intricate balance of talent, leadership, and timing that defines a championship team.
