Gorgui Dieng has moved from playing in the NBA to working in the front office as the Assistant General Manager for the Austin Spurs, the G League team of the San Antonio Spurs. Dieng, having ten NBA seasons under his belt, brings a lot of experience to his new position.

From Player to Leader

Gorgui Dieng played 31 games for the San Antonio Spurs in the 2022-23 NBA season, marking his final appearance in the league. His averages per game were 3.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists. Although he didn’t make a big impact on the court, his game knowledge and leadership abilities are now being acknowledged in this new phase of his career.

The Austin Spurs revealed his hiring as well as the advancement of Josh Larson to General Manager. Fans were fast to respond, expressing enthusiasm for Dieng’s new position. A tweet from a fan stated that Gorgui is currently serving as the assistant GM for our G League team, despite many people hoping he would be on the roster this season.

A Decade in the NBA

Selected as the 21st pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, Dieng had a successful career with stints at the Minnesota Timberwolves, Memphis Grizzlies, Atlanta Hawks, and San Antonio Spurs. Throughout 628 regular-season matches. His average stats were 7.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.3 assists, with a field goal percentage close to 50%.

With Dieng at the helm and the Spurs organization in transition. The Austin Spurs are looking to create a more robust future. After enduring a 22-60 season and five consecutive playoff absences. The San Antonio Spurs will turn to their G League squad for improvement and progress.
