Giannis Antetokounmpo 3-Years $186 Million Contract Extension with Bucks

Milwaukee Bucks’ two-time Kia NBA MVP, Giannis Antetokounmpo 3-years $186 million contract extension has been signed. This deal extends his contract with the Bucks through the 2027-28 season, including two guaranteed years and a player option for 2027-28.

Antetokounmpo’s journey to this extension began when he was drafted by the Bucks as the 15th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. Over the years, he has evolved into one of the league’s premier players, earning seven All-Star selections and being recognized as a member of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary team. In 2021, he led the Bucks to an NBA championship and recently delivered a career-best season, averaging 31.1 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 5.7 assists across 63 games.

After a somewhat disappointing finish in the 2023 playoffs, the Bucks made a significant offseason move by acquiring All-NBA guard Damian Lillard. With Antetokounmpo’s extension now secured, the duo of Lillard and Antetokounmpo will have ample time to develop their partnership.

This extension commences from the 2025-26 season, ensuring that Antetokounmpo will remain under contract for a minimum of four more years, with an option for a fifth year. His earnings will amount to approximately $94.4 million over the next two seasons, followed by an additional $120 million for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons. The last year remains at his discretion, providing him with the possibility of earning roughly $66 million more in the 2027-28 season.

It’s worth noting that had Antetokounmpo chosen to delay the extension until the following summer, he might have secured an even more substantial contract. Waiting until 2024 could have led to a four-year agreement exceeding $250 million.

During the Bucks’ Media Day event on October 2, Antetokounmpo playfully stated, “I said that it did not make sense to sign the contract right now because money’s not important — a lot of money is important. So I’m going to sign it next year.” He continued by emphasizing his desire to be a Milwaukee Buck throughout his career, as long as they continued to experience success.
