Gary Payton II has opted into the final year of his contract with the Golden State Warriors, according to ESPN’s Kendra Andrews. The decision on his $9.1 million player option was due Wednesday, and by opting in, Payton now also has the chance to negotiate an extension with the Warriors this summer.

Injury-Plagued Season for Gary Payton II

Payton’s recent season was marred by injuries, limiting him to just 44 games where he averaged 5.5 points and 2.6 rebounds. His struggles began with a right calf strain in late November, sidelining him for over a month. Shortly after his return, a left hamstring strain kept him out for another month, contributing to an overall frustrating season.

Career Journey and Contributions

Payton’s NBA journey began with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2017, followed by stints with multiple teams until he found stability with the Warriors at the end of the 2020–21 season. His defensive prowess and energy were pivotal in the Warriors’ 2021–22 championship run. This success earned him a three-year, $28 million deal with the Portland Trail Blazers. However, a core muscle surgery before the 2022–23 season limited him to just 15 games with the Blazers before being traded back to the Warriors at the 2023 deadline.

Impact on the Warriors and Future Prospects

Payton’s absence significantly impacted the Warriors’ defensive performance, contributing to their 15th-place finish in defensive rating (114.5) and their failure to advance past the Play-In Tournament, where they lost to the Sacramento Kings as the No. 10 seed in the Western Conference.

Given his injury history, it’s unsurprising that Payton opted into the final year of his deal. Entering free agency this summer, it’s unlikely he would have secured a contract with an annual salary matching or exceeding $9 million. By staying with the Warriors, he not only secures his salary but also remains with an organization that values his contributions.

While it remains uncertain if the Warriors will offer Gary Payton II an extension beyond next season, the possibility is on the table. Given his past impact on the team, a renewed contract wouldn’t be surprising.
