French basketball prodigy Alex Sarr is making waves as the 2024 NBA draft approaches. Unlike most prospects who simply hope to be picked, Sarr has a clear preference: he wants to play for the Washington Wizards over the Atlanta Hawks. The news that Alex Sarr Chooses Wizards over the Hawks, as revealed by ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, has sent shockwaves through the basketball community.

French Star Alex Sarr Chooses Wizards, Sparks Controversy

On a recent episode of the Hoop Collective podcast, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst discussed Sarr’s unique stance with Givony. Comparing it to the 2004 NFL draft when Eli Manning famously refused to play for the San Diego Chargers, Windhorst highlighted the potential for drama. However, Givony was quick to clarify the difference in Sarr’s case. “It’s not so much that Alex Sarr doesn’t want to play for Atlanta; he just prefers Washington,” Givony said, adding a layer of nuance to the situation.

So, why Washington? ESPN’s Jeremy Woo provided insight in his latest mock draft. According to Woo, the Wizards’ youthful roster offers Sarr a more defined path to significant playing time and development. Sarr, a 19-year-old standout from the Perth Wildcats, posted impressive stats in Australia’s NBL, averaging 9.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. His potential has drawn comparisons to Memphis Grizzlies star Jaren Jackson Jr.

Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Wasserman echoed this sentiment, projecting Sarr to be a perfect fit for the Wizards. Wasserman praised Sarr’s defensive prowess and his ability to hit threes, likening him to Jackson. “Even if Sarr isn’t scoring, he can still make a huge impact on both ends of the court,” Wasserman noted.

Yet, despite Sarr’s clear preference, the Hawks hold the power with the No. 1 overall pick. NBA insider Marc Stein reported that Atlanta hasn’t been able to secure a personal workout with Sarr, hinting at the young star’s disinterest. This isn’t the first time a top prospect has tried to steer their draft destiny. The Athletic’s Shams Charania and team noted a similar scenario in 2021 when Evan Mobley’s representatives cautioned the Cleveland Cavaliers against drafting him, though Mobley eventually thrived in Cleveland.

The Hawks could leverage this uncertainty to their advantage. Rumors are swirling that Atlanta might use their pick to pressure the Wizards into a trade. By hinting they might select Sarr, the Hawks could force Washington to make a move.

This year’s draft lacks a clear-cut favorite, adding an extra layer of suspense. Sarr’s reluctance to engage with the Hawks has only heightened the intrigue. As the draft night looms, all eyes are on this French sensation and the potential ripple effects of his preference. Will the Hawks call his bluff, or will the Wizards make a bold move to secure their man? One thing’s for sure: this draft is shaping up to be anything but predictable.
