China is back in action with the FIBA Asia Cup 2022 in Jakarta.

Due to their long history of winning the competition, China is one of the most dangerous teams in the competition. It is concerning that one of the most successful national teams in the history of the FIBA Asia Cup will be played by the opposing sides. China has proved itself in the past, and now they back mean things are not going well for the other teams in the event.

World Ranking

China is ranked 29 in the world according to the FIBA world ranking presented by Nike. Although they have dropped two spots in the world rankings, they remained at four among the teams in Asia and Oceania.

Asia Cup Debut

China made its debut in Asia Cup back in 1975 in Bangkok, Thailand. They showed dominance from the very first game. China won nine consecutive games to win Gold Medal in their maiden session. They relentlessly beat every single team with an average of 30.4 points. However, Korea showed some resistance with the closest fight of 19 points. Since then, China has participated in 23 FIBA Asia Cup events, including 2022.

Most Recent Appearance 2017

The year 2017 was not ideal, considering China’s previous performances. They barely made it to the quarter-finals and faced the wrath of Australia. Australia won the game and eventually cliched at the title.

Champions 16-Time

Despite not participating in the first seven editions, China had become champions 16 times. So far, 29 editions of the Asia Cup got played, but China won more than half of them. They won their first five championships consecutively while finished at third in 1985. They saw the rise again, winning five more successive Asia Cups but again finished third in 1997. Thereafter, China won four more consecutive championships, but since then, China faced ups and downs. Recently, in 2017 they barely qualified for the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, all in all, China’s success is inevitable.

Notable Player

Although China produced numerous legendary players during its reign, Yao Ming had arguably the highest impact ever. Ming played three Asia Cups in his prime and dominated his opponents with 24 straight wins. The global star won MVP in all three Asia Cups. He played with an average of 18.7 points per game. He got retired in 2011, but it seems an undeniable fact that anyone can reach the status he achieved.

Current Outlook

China remained undefeated during the qualifiers of the Asia Cup, and they are looking promising to clinch the title thus years. They have the quality of players who are playing in their heyday. They have a very balanced team with some young players like Hu MingXuan and Zhang Zhenlin, while some veterans are also part of the team like Zhou Peng and Zhou Qi.

China needs to go with full strength and dominate from the very beginning. They didn’t achieve the desired results in the World Cup and missed the Tokyo Olympics. However, they have shown serious commitments in the World Cup and Asia Cup qualifiers. China has a record that they never missed consecutive final appearances. They will never want to start with 2022.
