Devin Booker, a player in Phoenix Suns Nash recently joined Noah Lyles in a disagreement concerning the NBA “world champion” title. Standing and enjoying the victory with Lyles as he won the gold in the 100m race, Booker told The Athletic his stand on the debate that Lyles caused when he came out last summer.
Lyles raised a lot of dust over this by suggesting that NBA champions should not be referred to as the world champions since this is a title assigned to the league’s best team of the season. This remark caused mixed reactions from sportsmen, and basketball players, namely; Kevin Durant and Damian Lillard boycotted the idea by returning a response to Lyles that the championship trophies are for the league; nevertheless, the NBA hero, Giannis Antetokounmpo, supported the idea of league-specific titles.
Booker’s Perspective
“I still don’t agree with the comment,” Booker said after witnessing Lyles’ victory. “The NBA hosts the best talent globally. As an Olympic gold medalist myself, I believe securing an NBA championship is one of the toughest feats.”
Booker noted that talent-wise the US has never been close to teams from other countries and thus stressed the fact of how hard it is to win an NBA championship. Discussing Noah Lyles’ statement with the fans, Devin Booker said, “The statement was made, but the manner he delivered it looked as if it was something he has been wanting to say for quite some time now.”
Acknowledging Lyles’ Success
However, Lyles has stood his ground and the video has received a large following from people despite this controversy. He has stuck to his position and has rightfully earned his turn, Booker accepted Lyles’ victory as a deserved one.
The NBA’s Elite Talent
Booker highlighted the superior skill level of the NBA in comparison to international teams, pointing out that even less successful NBA teams could probably outmatch international champions. He emphasized the difficulty of earning an NBA championship within this framework.
In the upcoming 2024-25 season, Devin Booker is currently aiming to win another Olympic gold for the United States while also leading the Suns to their first-ever NBA championship. Despite ongoing discussions on the title of “world champion,” Booker remains steadfast in his dedication to showcasing the NBA’s worldwide supremacy.
