Recently, Derek Fisher, a five-time NBA champion, appeared on the Fast Break podcast with Byron Scott, where he drew an interesting comparison between the evolution of the NBA and professional wrestling. Fisher compared the league’s transition from being a competitive, physical confrontation to a sport focused more on entertainment to the switch from WWF (World Wrestling Federation) to WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment).

From Battle to Entertainment

Derek Fisher pointed out that the change is not necessarily bad, just different. He observed that the current NBA places a greater emphasis on being entertaining, featuring a fast-paced style of play and storylines that appeal to marketing. This change has broadened the sport’s reach and made it more attractive to casual viewers. Nevertheless, Fisher found himself pondering the NBA’s history, when matches were like fierce contests, featuring players like Charles Oakley and Shaquille O’Neal overpowering their opponents in the key.

NBA’s New Style of Play

Currently, the emphasis of the league is on talent and elegance, with players such as Stephen Curry and Luka Doncic at the forefront. The focus on spacing, shooting from three points, and fast-paced play has revolutionized the sport. Fisher noted that although the intense battles of the past have diminished, today’s NBA still displays exceptional skills in a new way.

Balancing Competition and Entertainment

According to Fisher, changes in the NBA represent a larger pattern in sports where fan interaction and enjoyment are crucial. However, he conceded that the strength and level of competition of present-day athletes should not be overlooked. His remarks are a gentle nudge about the importance of respecting the history of basketball while also looking ahead to the future.
