Cui Yongxi: The Chinese Underdog Ready to Shake the NBA

Reflecting on his path through intense workouts and the high-pressure environment of the NBA draft, Cui described the experience as transformative. Competing against elite players from the world’s top basketball league, he felt the sting of setbacks but refused to let fear take hold. “It’s disappointing to go undrafted, but that’s the nature of the NBA. It’s like interviewing for a position at a top-tier firm,” he remarked.

Cui’s journey included grueling workouts with several NBA teams, each session a test of his physical and mental stamina. “The schedules were tight, and the intensity was off the charts,” Cui said, highlighting the relentless pace and focus of the training.

His first stop was with the Brooklyn Nets, where he felt a unique connection due to the team’s Chinese elements. “The training there went smoothly,” he noted. But it was in Utah, training at high altitude, where Cui faced a real test of endurance. “The thin air made it challenging, but I adapted,” he shared, emphasizing the cardiovascular and endurance focus of the sessions.

Indiana brought a brush with NBA legend Larry Bird. “If you make 20 out of 25 three-pointers, you get to ring a big bell,” Cui recalled, smiling at the memory of this unique training incentive.

Towards the end of his rigorous schedule, Cui faced injuries that tested his resolve. In Portland, the pain in his Achilles tendon became nearly unbearable. “I wrapped it tighter and pushed through,” he said, demonstrating a tenacity that sets champions apart. A setback in New York forced him to rest and reschedule, but Cui took it in stride, viewing every challenge as a stepping stone.

Training with different teams, including Ja Morant’s Memphis Grizzlies, offered diverse experiences. “Each team has its unique style. Morant’s team emphasized individual skills, while Orlando focused on shooting. Every trainer brought something valuable,” Cui explained.

Despite not being drafted, Cui’s spirit remains unbroken. His eyes are still set on the NBA. “My goal is clear—I want to reach the top. I hope everyone with a dream will pursue it boldly and never look back,” he declared, his voice resonating with unwavering determination.

Cui Yongxi’s journey might be peppered with challenges, but his story is a testament to the power of resilience and the unyielding pursuit of dreams. His message is clear: setbacks are just setups for comebacks.
