Charles Barkley Slams ESPN for Coverage of Coaching Rumors of Lakers
Barkley recently criticized the network for prioritizing conjectural coaching updates about the Los Angeles Lakers over more important sporting events. NBA legend Charles Barkley didn’t hesitate to express his opinions on ESPN’s coverage choices.

Barkley’s Discontent with ESPN’s Coverage

The source of Barkley’s annoyance was when ESPN decided to announce the possibility of UConn head coach Danny Hurley transferring to the Lakers. This tale surfaced right before the start of Game 1 of the NBA Finals, a period in which basketball enthusiasts were eagerly anticipating the championship showdown. Barkley found it frustrating that the network decided to focus on this rumor instead of giving more attention to the NBA Finals and the Stanley Cup Finals.
“I was really angry yesterday, so I had to switch off my TV,” Barkley disclosed to Dan Dakich on “Don’t @ Me.” He condemned ESPN’s programming choices, describing the network’s decision as “dumb” and “foolish.” Barkley believed that the Hurley news, although only speculated and unverified, received more focus than the critical finals events.

Barkley’s Broader Critique

Barkley’s critique extended beyond just the isolated incident. Frustration of  Barkley with the media’s obsession on the Lakers, particularly in seasons when the team has not done well, has been evident for a long time. He had previously expressed regret about the focus on the Lakers despite their average performance, wondering why they get more attention than other teams.

The Final Decision

In the end, Hurley decided not to become a part of the Lakers. The team decided to bring on J.J. Redick as their new head coach instead. Barkley’s criticism highlights his opinion that networks should focus on broadcasting important sports events and give them proper coverage, instead of engaging in speculation about unverified stories.
