The Serbian national basketball team has encountered a series of setbacks due to injuries throughout their journey in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Unfortunately, this trend persists, as they now face the loss of a player for the entire tournament.
Borisa Simanic, a key member of the team, found himself in a critical situation after receiving a blow to his kidney area during a game against South Sudan. With less than two minutes remaining in the match, Simanic was unable to continue due to the severity of the injury.
Subsequently, Simanic was promptly transported to a hospital in Manila, where he underwent emergency surgery during the night to address his condition.
The Serbian Basketball Federation (KSS) confirmed that Simanic’s overall health is stable, and the functionality of his kidney remains intact. Nevertheless, it has been determined that he will be unable to participate in the remainder of the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
In the span of three games played alongside his team, Serbia’s Borisa Simanic managed to maintain an average of 1 point and 1 rebound per game, with an approximate playing time of 6.5 minutes.
The 2023 FIBA World Cup has been marked by injury-related challenges for the Serbian team. Earlier in the tournament, players Filip Petrusev and Aleksa Avramovic also succumbed to injuries, rendering them unavailable for the match against South Sudan. Their participation in the upcoming game against Italy remains uncertain, contingent on their recovery progress.
