Kawamura Yuki made his first appearance in the NBA, playing for the Memphis Grizzlies in their 128-108 defeat to the Houston Rockets on Friday, October 25th. Supporters were excited for the 1.73-meter Japanese point guard to come on the court, entering the game with 3:34 remaining in the fourth quarter while Memphis was behind 123-104. While Kawamura didn’t attempt a shot, he achieved his first NBA assist by assisting Jaylen Wells in scoring a layup with a little over a minute left.

Still in his early 20s, Kawamura is quickly gaining popularity among fans in Memphis. He proudly becomes part of the group of Japanese players in the NBA. Kawamura, who was originally signed to an Exhibit 10 contract in September after playing for Japan’s Yokohama B-Corsairs. He made a strong impression during preseason with averages of 3.4 points and 4.2 assists in five games. He was promoted to a two-way contract on October 19 because of his performance. Making him the third point guard on the Grizzlies’ depth chart behind Ja Morant and Scottie Pippen Jr.
