The Rockets have shared the news of the death of their former general manager and assistant coach Carroll Dawson, lovingly referred to as “CD.” He was eighty-six years old. Dawson was instrumental in molding the Rockets over almost 30 years and played a crucial part in their achievements.
A Cornerstone of the Rockets Organization
Dawson played a key role in the growth of Rockets icons such as Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson. He is the sole coach who has been there for all four of the Rockets’ NBA Finals appearances, which include winning consecutive championships in the mid-1990s. During his time as general manager, Dawson recruited legendary players such as Charles Barkley, Steve Francis, Yao Ming, and Tracy McGrady to the Houston team. He also contributed to putting together the Houston Comets, who won the WNBA championship four times.
Remembering His Impact and Character
In addition to his basketball accomplishments, Dawson was famous for his personality. The Rockets commended his positive attitude, contagious sense of humor, and compassionate character in a press release. His memory will always be honored at the Toyota Center with other Rockets greats.

A Life of Dedication to Basketball
Carroll Dawson was a player for Baylor during his time in college and then went on to coach the team from 1973 to 1977. He started working with the Rockets as a coach in 1980 and remained in that role until 1996, after which he shifted to a position in the front office. Dawson held the position of general manager until 2007, at which point he handed over the reins to his successor, Daryl Morey.
