Zach Edey Favored to Win Rookie of the Year

Projections are being made, with Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey emerging as a top contender for Rookie of the Year. According to a recent poll by ESPN’s Tim Bontemps, Edey received the most votes with eight from 18 NBA coaches, scouts, and executives.

A Wide-Open Rookie Race

Edey wasn’t the sole player to receive acknowledgment. Reed Sheppard of the Houston Rockets came in second place with five votes. While Alex Sarr of the Washington Wizards received two votes. Stephon Castle, Tristan da Silva, and Rob Dillingham, along with other players, received votes, highlighting the absence of a definite frontrunner in this year’s group of newcomers.

Bontemps pointed out that Edey’s expected starting role with the Grizzlies provides him with a competitive advantage. Bontemps clarified that even though Edey is expected to begin playing as center immediately. Moreover, Sheppard’s game time might be affected by the Rockets’ strong guard lineup.

Edey’s Impact in Memphis

It is anticipated that Zach Edey will have a quick influence on the Grizzlies. While at Purdue, the 7’4″ center received the National College Player of the Year award twice. In his final year, he controlled the game, scoring an average of 25.2 points, grabbing 12.2 rebounds, and blocking 2.2 shots per game. Currently, he is ready to serve as a defensive leader next to Jaren Jackson Jr.. Who was named the Defensive Player of the Year in 2023.

Following a season where injuries were a major issue and the team finished with a record of 27-55. Moreover, Memphis is relying on a full roster and Edey’s input to help them make a run for the playoffs. Furthermore, the Grizzlies are aiming for a new beginning in the 2024-25 season with Zach Edey as top contender for Rookie.
