Danilo Gallinari, the 6’10” forward known for his floor-spacing ability, is actively seeking one more NBA contract as he navigates the free-agent market. Last season, Gallinari had stints with the Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons, and Milwaukee Bucks, though his contributions were limited. He averaged 5.7 points per game and shot 32.3% from beyond the arc after returning from a torn ACL that sidelined him for the entire 2022-23 season. Now 36, Gallinari faces the question of whether there’s still a spot for him in the league.

In a recent interview with Italy’s La Repubblica (with a nod to BasketNews), Gallinari reflected on his future. “A return to Italy? Not yet,” he stated, signaling that his focus remains on the NBA. “There is still time for [me in] the market, anything can happen at any time. Miami? It’s not my time yet, there are other free agents and we’ll decide later. It could be anywhere, as long as it’s a competitive franchise.”

Gallinari made contributions to underperforming teams in Washington and Detroit last season, but his role with Milwaukee was limited until injuries hit the Bucks in the playoffs, forcing him into a more prominent role where he performed better than expected. However, it became apparent that Gallinari had lost a step following his ACL injury, making him a less ideal fit for the Bucks, a team that was already in need of more athleticism rather than another veteran with reduced mobility.

As the offseason continues, Danilo Gallinari remains hopeful that injuries or other circumstances could open up a roster spot for him in the NBA. In the meantime, he’s staying in shape by doing preseason workouts with Treviglio, a Serie B team in Italy. While Gallinari is holding out for an NBA opportunity, the possibility of returning to his native country and playing there this season seems to be increasing. With his career winding down, Gallinari is taking a patient approach, waiting to see what opportunities might arise.
