Jasper Johnson, a top-tier prospect with a ranking of No. 11 nationally and a 98.39 rating, has been the center of attention in this year’s recruiting landscape. Despite a mixed bag of rankings—ESPN places him at 12th, On3 at 22nd—the buzz around Johnson is undeniable. The only major service that lists him as a 4-star recruit is On3, a notable discrepancy that only adds to the intrigue.
Johnson, a dynamic 6-4 guard known for his explosive scoring and ability to drive to the basket, has had a season marked by ups and downs. His shooting has been inconsistent—37.9% from the field and 25.5% from three-point range at EYBL Peach Jam. Yet, he demonstrated his potential at Damian Lillard’s Formula Zero Elite Camp and the USA U18 squad, showing a refined shooting touch with a 51.1% field goal percentage and 42.3% from beyond the arc.
With over 25 offers and visits to all his finalists, Johnson’s decision is highly anticipated. The final five include Kentucky, Alabama, North Carolina, Louisville, and Arkansas. Kentucky has been a constant presence, with Johnson making seven visits, the latest on August 1. Alabama, the first Power Five school to offer him, has also been a significant player, with three visits including an official one on June 24. North Carolina has made its case with two visits, including a standout official visit in February.
Despite the odds heavily favoring Kentucky, with On3’s prediction machine giving them a 75% chance of landing Johnson, Alabama is not out of the running. Coach Nate Oats and the Alabama staff have been persistent, having built a strong relationship with Johnson over three years. The presence of Johnson’s former teammates, Derrion Reid and Labaron Philon, who signed with Alabama for the 2024 class, adds another layer of intrigue.
North Carolina, with its authentic approach and the unique experience of having former players as coaches, has also made a lasting impression. Johnson’s father, Dennis, highlighted the impressive and genuine nature of UNC’s pitch.
