The Golden State Warriors community is mourning the loss of a beloved figure, Al Attles, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 87. In his message, Steph Curry expressed the deep sadness felt throughout the Bay Area and among Warriors fans. He shared a photo of himself alongside Attles, captioned with words of admiration and respect: “Unfortunate day for the whole Bay Area and all Warriors fans. Steph’s sentiments were echoed by Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who also shared his condolences with the Attles family. “I just wanted to express my condolences on behalf of the Warriors organization to Al Attles’ family,” Kerr said. “Such sad news that Al passed away. The original Warrior. Mr. Warrior. One man who was employed by the same franchise for over 60 years, unprecedented in sports. Al was the figurehead of this organization for so many years, first as a great player, then as a great coach, coach of the 1975 championship team, of course. A GM, an ambassador, and most importantly — a great friend to the organization.”
Kerr went on to emphasize the significant impact Attles had on the Warriors and how his legacy will continue to resonate within the organization. “So a very sad day today. We love Al. We love his family. And we’re thinking about the Attles family today upon the news.”
Al Attles’ extraordinary journey with the Warriors began when he was drafted 39th overall in 1960. Over the next 60 years, Attles became an integral part of the franchise, serving as a player, coach, general manager, and ambassador. His legacy, cemented by his induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, will live on as the Warriors celebrate his life and contributions to the game.
