Charles Barkley, the iconic basketball personality known for his unfiltered commentary, has once again found himself in the middle of a controversy. A recent video revealed that Charles Barkley is afraid to even mention San Antonio, leaving him at a loss for words. Why does this city hold such a significant place in his mind?

Why Charles Barkley Is Afraid to Mention San Antonio

In a playful segment on the ‘FanDuel’ YouTube channel, Barkley participated in a word association game. When asked about Baton Rouge, Tuscaloosa, and Auburn, his responses were predictable: “Football.” However, when San Antonio was mentioned, he paused, smiled, and simply said, “great city.” This brief moment hints at a long-standing feud Barkley has had with San Antonio, particularly its women.

For years, on his show ‘Inside the NBA,’ Barkley has made jokes about the women of San Antonio, often referring to them as overweight. While he insists these comments are made in jest, many have found them offensive and hurtful. Barkley’s remarks have sparked outrage and have been labeled as fat-shaming.

During an interview with ‘Grant & Danny’ on 106.7 The Fan, Barkley voiced his frustration over being censored. “They won’t even let me talk about San Antonio anymore. I’ve always joked about their big ole women,” he said. The controversy reached a boiling point when a woman wrote an article accusing Barkley of fat-shaming, leading the producers of ‘Inside the NBA’ to step in. Barkley defended his comments, saying, “I didn’t call anybody personally fat in San Antonio. It was just a joke. We’ve been having fun with this for years, and the people in San Antonio were laughing along.”

Despite his defense, Barkley has noticeably toned down his comments about San Antonio. The memory of this controversy still lingers, influencing his responses even in casual games.

Beyond basketball, Barkley has a surprising connection to football. In a conversation with NFL legend Shannon Sharpe, Barkley shared a hilarious anecdote about his brief attempt to play football. “I played football for one day. I ran into a guy full speed for two hours. It was the stupidest thing ever,” he recalled. Barkley’s football dreams ended as quickly as they began, with him quitting after the first day of practice.

Interestingly, Barkley also had a chance to host a football show. During an appearance on ‘The Jim Brockmire Podcast,’ he revealed that ESPN approached him to host ‘Monday Night Football.’ Barkley’s response was both candid and comical: “I like football, but I’m not going to be one of those guys who pretends to know everything about it.”

The saga of Charles Barkley and San Antonio is far from over. As the controversy simmers, Barkley remains a figure who never fails to stir the pot, keeping audiences engaged and entertained.
