During the offseason, the Charlotte Hornets have been busy making strategic moves to emphasize their commitment to rebuilding their team for future success. A significant transaction included acquiring former Hornet Devonte Graham from the San Antonio Spurs, only to release him soon after. This deal enabled the Hornets to obtain a second-round pick while assisting the Spurs in reducing salary.

Spurs’ Active Offseason

San Antonio has been just as active over the summer, acquiring Chris Paul through free agency and engaging in a sign-and-trade deal with DeMar DeRozan to bring Harrison Barnes over from the Sacramento Kings. The Hornets helped the Spurs create room in the salary cap to welcome their new players.

Focused on Development

The Hornets are focused on developing their young core instead of prioritizing immediate victories. Under the guidance of head coach Charles Lee, the Hornets are giving him the liberty to shape the team’s upcoming talents. LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller, Miles Bridges, Tidjane Salaun, and Mark Williams make up the core group of the team. At the same time, Tre Mann, rookie KJ Simpson, and Nick Smith Jr. are being assessed for their possible impact.

Acquiring Draft Capital

Charlotte’s readiness to take on salaries that other teams don’t want is a crucial aspect of their overall plan to accumulate draft picks. This plan has been in progress since the start of the offseason. Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer reported on June 21 that both the Hornets and the Detroit Pistons were regarded as teams that were willing to absorb unwanted contracts.
The Hornets have implemented this strategy by making moves such as acquiring Reggie Jackson from the Denver Nuggets and bringing in Graham from the Spurs. Moreover, they have recently released players like Davis Bertans, Bryce McGowens, and Aleksej Pokusevski, which has helped to free up more space in their salary cap.

Commitment to a Patient Rebuild

Charlotte’s methodical and patient rebuild exemplifies their dedication. The Hornets are setting themselves up for future success by focusing on the growth of their young core and carefully acquiring draft picks. Their readiness to acquire problematic contracts for assets reflects their commitment to a strategic and thorough rebuilding process.
In the past few years, the Hornets have consistently ranked low in the Eastern Conference standings. However, their current approach indicates a commitment to rebuilding properly and not rushing the process.
