Angel Reese, forward for the Chicago Sky, has been named the first member of the ownership group for the DC Power Football Club, a new professional women’s soccer team based in Washington, D.C. The team will compete in the United Soccer League (USL) Super League, set to launch its inaugural season in August 2024.

Empowering Women’s Sports

“I want to help grow women’s sports and elevate female athletes across the board,” Reese stated in a DC Power press release. “We’re taking over, and I’m honored to be able to support Power FC and invest in women’s soccer in the DMV community.”

Reese’s investment in DC Power FC underscores her commitment to advancing women’s sports. The DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) native is well-placed to make an impact, having grown up in Randallstown, Md., and leading the LSU Lady Tigers to their first NCAA Division I National Championship in 2023. She also founded the Angel C. Reese Foundation in her hometown to further support local communities.

Exciting Returns and Future Contributions

Reese will return to the DMV as a WNBA pro on June 6 when the Chicago Sky faces the Washington Mystics at Capital One Arena. Her involvement with DC Power FC goes beyond financial support; she aims to inspire the next generation of female athletes.

“Angel Reese is passionate about being a catalyst for positive change in women’s sports in the DMV and globally,” said Jason Levien, D.C. United CEO and Co-Chairman, in the press release. “Her decision to be a founding investor is groundbreaking.”

DC Power FC Developments

DC Power FC has already made significant strides, announcing their first executive hire, Jordan Stuart, and inaugural head coach, Frédéric Brillant. The team will play at Audi Field, providing a professional platform for women’s soccer in the nation’s capital.

The USL Super League, a new Division II women’s professional soccer league, will feature eight founding teams, including those in WNBA markets such as Brooklyn, NY, and Dallas, TX. Phoenix, home to the Mercury, will join in 2025 or later, pending stadium project completions.

A New Era for Women’s Sports

Reese’s involvement with DC Power FC signifies a broader movement towards increased investment and visibility for women’s sports. Her leadership and commitment to fostering positive change reflect a growing recognition of the importance of supporting female athletes at all levels. As DC Power FC gears up for its debut, Reese’s role as an investor and advocate promises to elevate the profile of women’s soccer and inspire future generations.
