Lakers Coaching Rumors: LeBron James Not Involved as Team Considers JJ Redick and Others

The Los Angeles Lakers are methodically navigating their search for a new head coach after parting ways with Darvin Ham following their first-round playoff exit against the Denver Nuggets. Among the potential candidates are high-profile names like JJ Redick and Sam Cassell, as well as less-known assistant coaches such as Micah Nori and David Adelman. Contrary to popular belief, franchise superstar LeBron James is not actively involved in the hiring process.

“LeBron James is not involved in the Lakers head coaching search,” reported Shams Charania on Monday. “LeBron James has made it clear this is the organization’s decision.”

Charania further explained that James has not discussed the possibility of hiring Redick with the Lakers’ front office. Although Redick, who has no prior coaching experience, recently started a podcast with James where they deeply analyze basketball, this collaboration does not imply that James prefers Redick as the next Lakers head coach. According to James’ agent, Rich Paul, the podcast relationship is separate from coaching considerations.

Despite James’ lack of direct involvement, the Lakers’ front office will undoubtedly consider how the new coach will integrate with James, especially given his significant influence on the team. Furthermore, James’ future with the Lakers is uncertain, as he has the option to enter free agency this summer.

The Lakers have been granted permission to interview several assistant coaches, including Sam Cassell, Micah Nori, David Adelman, and James Borrego. Initially, they aim to evaluate coaches they are less familiar with before revisiting other former head coaches in the later stages of their search.

The specific qualities the Lakers are seeking in their next head coach remain unclear, but it is evident that the chosen candidate will face immense pressure to deliver results immediately. With James’ player option looming, a potential draft that could include his son Bronny James, and a roster in need of upgrades, the hiring of a new head coach is just the first of many crucial decisions the Lakers must address this offseason.
